Man-made underground passage in Cottage (dunkellin By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Dunkellin By. holds a man-made underground passage inside its rath, immediately southwest of the entrance according to local tradition. The passage defied detection during the 1948-9 excavations in the SE quadrant and entrance area, suggesting it vanished or resisted human mapping. That absence makes the rath feel less like a ruined structure and more like a living trap, waiting for someone to stop looking for keys and start listening for breath.
According to local tradition, there is a Man-made underground passage (GA095-009001-) in the interior of rath (GA095-009----), immediately to the SW of the entrance. No visible surface trace of it survives nor was any trace found in the course of the excavations undertaken in the SE quadrant and entrance area in 1948-9. The location indicated by the ITM coordinates for this record must only be considered as approximate. (Comber 2002) Compiled by: Paul Walsh Date of upload: 29 May 2014
