Man-made underground passage in Coolkisha

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Coolkisha holds a hidden passage beneath one of its ringforts, recorded in 1844 but vanished from modern sight. The fort still stands in County Cork, yet the cave has no entrance, no marker, no trace. Perhaps water filled it, or stones shifted during storms. People forgot the way down, but the hollow darkness remains waiting beneath the grass.
In ringfort (CO071-029001-). 'Name Books of 1844 Survey mention cave in one of the forts' (the other being CO071-027----). 'Suggestion of one at approx. centre -depression and hollow sound' (PJH). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
