Man-made underground passage in Clashygowan

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

In 1956 a Man-made underground passage was reported here (NMI). It was about 14ft long × 4ft deep × 3ft wide. Halfway along, the passage narrowed to about 2ft 2in and then widened again. It was built of stone and the report suggests that there were indications of other such structures possibly other chambers, on the site also. An inscribed slab (DG055-025002-) now in private possession was said to have been found in the Man-made underground passage. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
