Man-made underground passage in Claraghatlea South

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Closed now, but easy to open, the passage ran three hundred yards beneath Claraghmore, waiting for hands bold enough to pull the dirt aside. It is no wonder such a place disappears when people stop walking it.
Bowman (1934, 317) recorded a Man-made underground passage 'at foot of mountain in Mr Pomeroy's land, c. 300 yards, S.W. of fort [CO039-05301-] in Claraghmore. This is now closed, but could easily be opened'. Exact location not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
