Man-made underground passage in Carrowroe West (ballymoe By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Carrowroe West holds a vanished underground passage inside its ringfort, now reduced to an infilled hollow at the centre. Neary recorded the claim in 1914, preserving a shape of darkness that people no longer walk. The earth may have swallowed the tunnel, or the tunnel may have waited patiently for forgetfulness.
Within a ringfort (GA030-028----). Neary (1914, 115, no. 111) states that 'The garth [of this ringfort] ... contains a Man-made underground passage'. According to the landowner, it was situated in the centre of the interior but all that is now visible is an infilled hollow. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
