Man-made underground passage in Carrigroe (ibane and Barryroe By.)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Under Carrigroe, a hidden chamber waits beneath the ringfort bank. Men building a road in 1970 broke through the earth and found the dark passage already made. The chamber has no door, no owner and no explanation. It only proves that people lived there long enough to shape the rock before forgetting the way back.
According to local information, chamber discovered c. 1970 while levelling bank of ringfort (CO135-076001-). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
