What is recorded here
Underground passage in a Carrigroe burial ground, built by human hands though no longer visible from above. It may have let people walk beneath the dead, carry water, hide during storms or reach a chamber now forgotten. The absence of a entrance does not remove the passage; it only stops most people from imagining it.
Underground chamber in burial ground (CO135-073001-), according to local information. No visible surface trace.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
