What is recorded here

Under a partially levelled ringfort in Cappeen West, a man-made passage waits in darkness. Road works broke the surface and revealed the hidden cavity, while local memory has long claimed caves beneath the ruined earth. The passage does not advertise itself on the landscape, but it remains recorded as a deliberate construction under an old defensive site.
Discovered during road widening. Local reports mention "caves" under partially levelled ringfort (CO094-06101-). No surface evidence noted. (UCC). The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
