Man-made underground passage in Baronsland (gowran By., Tullaherin Ed)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Baronsland once hid a man-made tunnel beside an enclosure, now levelled and absent from the ground. Whether the passage served trade, flight or worship remains unproven, but the tradition persists in local memory. The earth kept the secret while the surface forgot, leaving only a name and a shape implied beneath the soil.
There is a local tradition of an underground ‘tunnel’ passage, possibly a Man-made underground passage, associated with an enclosure (KK024-081001-) which is now levelled (NMI Correspondence files 1961; O’Kelly 1969, 98). When visited in 1994 there was no indication of this feature at ground level. Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 11 October 2021
