Man-made underground passage in Barnacahoge

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Barnacahoge is a rath in County Mayo where local tradition still points to a buried passage, though no entrance or tunnel remains visible. The field may have swallowed the hole, closed the shaft or taken the stairs long after the people who used them stopped coming and going. What is left is a shape in the land and a warning that memory can preserve what sight has lost.
Located in a rath (MA072-092001-). There is a local tradition of a Man-made underground passage associated with the rath. No visible trace. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 21 May 2021

This remains an important historical record, but the official description says the monument is no longer visible or has been destroyed. The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
