Man-made underground passage in Banteer

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Banteer holds two hidden passages beside an old ringfort, but heavy machinery collapsed the first and thistles now mark the wound. The second remains waiting sixty metres west, unbroken and unseen, perhaps still holding the shape of the people who dug it.
In pasture, c. 120m SE of ringfort (CO031-061---). According to local information, ground collapsed here due to weight of heavy machinery; clump of thistles indicates site. Second possible Man-made underground passage (CO031-06201-) c. 60m to W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 4: North Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 2000). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
