Ballyvelone West holds a man-made underground passage inside the north-west quadrant of its ringfort. The hollow space may have served as a hidden refuge, a storage vault or a ceremonial path during the life of the fort. Its exact purpose has faded, but the passage still provokes wonder because it shows that the ringfort contained more than visible walls.
