Man-made underground passage in Ballyduvane (ibane and Barryroe By., Kilgarriff Par.)

This Man-made underground passage was discovered in 2000 during pipe-laying for the Clonakilty water supply scheme. It consists of at least 2 chambers. Chamber 1 (c. 3m x c. 2.5m; H c. 1.2m), which is earth- and rock-cut, was entered through an opening which had been cut by machinery in its W side. At its W end was a construction shaft (Wth c. 2m), blocked up with stones. A blocked creepway (Wth c. 1.8m) at the E end of the chamber leads S to a second chamber. Chamber 2 is inaccessible as its roof has collapsed into it. A portion of a construction shaft is visible in its NW end.
