Man-made underground passage in Ballybaun (lackalea Ed)

That is the largest chamber recorded here. It is a man-made underground passage within the northern sector of a rath in Ballybaun, County Galway. A single roof lintel still breaks the grass, marking the throat of a narrow depression that runs east for nearly three metres. The alignment points northwest to southeast, like a finger pressing through soil toward some forgotten door. The landowner knew it was there, perhaps passing the lintel daily without thinking about the dark space beneath. Someone dug through living earth, set heavy stone across the top, and walked away into history. The passage remains waiting for breath, shadow, or a person willing to listen for the difference.
