Man-made underground passage in Ballinvoher (deerpark Ed)

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Dead men's Pass: human-cut, but tool marks have faded. Local memory still points to a hidden chamber beneath the green. The field gives no warning, only a slight dip and a change in air. What was built there has been forgotten, not lost.
In a hollow in a otherwise flat field. According to local tradition, there is a 'cave' here which is now blocked up. Possibly a natural limestone cave. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
