Man-made underground passage in Ballineadig

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Closed darkness, not lost marble. A man-made passage ran inside the northern rampart of the Ballineadig ringfort, recorded by Hartnett in 1939 before it was closed up. It has no visible trace now, but the buried shape suggests a place built to be entered, watched, remembered and finally stopped.
In N half of ringfort (CO072-107001-). Hartnett (1939, 112) recorded a Man-made underground passage 'inside the northern rampart but it has long since been closed up'. No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
