Man-made underground passage in Ballaghadown North

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No visible surface trace, only a passed-down belief that a passage cuts through the northern half of the ringfort. The claim appears in the published Archaeological Inventory of County Cork, Volume 1: West Cork, issued by the Stationery Office in Dublin in 1992. The absence of proof is the strange part: a whole chamber may exist beneath ordinary ground, waiting for someone stubborn enough to dig.
Tradition of Man-made underground passage in N half of ringfort (CO119-081---). No visible surface trace. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
