Man-made underground passage in Ardfintan

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

No one knows when the passage closed or who stopped using it. The ringfort at Ardfintan still stands in County Galway, but the cave beneath its eastern sector has vanished from sight. Perhaps it collapsed, perhaps people forgot the entrance, or perhaps they sealed it when the place stopped being theirs. What remains is a hole in memory rather than a hole in the ground.
In E sector of a ringfort (GA041-001----). Local tradition of a 'cave' of which no visible surface trace survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
