Man-made underground passage in An Rinn Bhuí

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Lisnarahardin rises above An Rinn Bhuí as a circular bivallate rath, holding faint traces of three or four hut-sites within its double banks. Local tradition claims a man-made underground passage once cut through that earth, perhaps linking the dwellings or escaping storm waters. The rath still stands, but the passage has vanished, leaving behind a hole in the story rather than a hole in the ground.
Lisnarahardin/Lios na Rátha Áirde: Circular bivallate rath KE043-239---- contains traces of 3 or 4 hut-sites and also reputedly contained a Man-made underground passage (OSNB Cloghane, book 2, 8). The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 524. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 7 August 2013
