Man-made underground passage in An Leargain Bhreac

A very ruined cashel (DG028-003001-) consisting of a mass of collapsed stone. Two short stretches of the outer wall face are visible to the S and E but it is not possible to calculate the wall width. 10m outside on the S an apparently natural scarp is faced with large stones. On the W side of the cashel a section of Man-made underground passage is accessible for 9m N-S. It is open at the S and there was obviously an extension from here towards the SE. The walls are made up of large slabs with some drystone wall-ing. The roof consists of slabs. The passage is c. 0.8m wide and c. 0.9m high. The N end is marked by collapsed stone. The site is located on a gentle SE facing slope in mixed rough to fair land. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal.
