What is recorded here
An Clochán (tc Na Gleannta) contains a man-made underground passage extending east from a hut toward a large oval cairn. The passage connects the ruined circular structure to the stone-and-earth mound fifty metres away, creating a hidden link across the gentle slope overlooking Ventry Harbour. People likely dug through solid earth to reach the cairn without climbing or exposing themselves to the harbour wind. The missing wall and faint depressions suggest the entrance has slipped beneath soil, leaving the tunnel invisible except in memory and local tradition.
Liscunneendeen/Lios Coinín Doinn: Roughly circular univallate rath KE052-052---- is located on a very gentle SW facing slope overlooking Ventry Harbour. A Man-made underground passage and hut site have previously been recorded in the interior and a large cairn lies 50m to NE.
The circular ruin (KE052-052002-) mentioned in the OSNB (Kildrum, 25) and described as being 12 feet (3.65m) in diameter and 5 feet (1.5m) high is no longer extant, the only features visible in the interior being 2 depressions, .75m deep and irregular in outline. The Man-made underground passage KE052-052001- led E from the hut and was said to extend as far as the cairn KE052-052003-. The latter, composed of a mixture of earth and stone, is oval in plan and measures 11m N-S, 8m E-W and 1.5m in height.
The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 363. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
