Man-made underground passage

Man-made underground passage

What is recorded here

Inside a Mid Cork ringfort, a small eastern opening revealed a man-made underground passage before infill buried it again. Hartnett documented the entrance in 1939, preserving the fact that people once cut or dug beneath the rampart. The passage may have served as a cellar, refuge or hidden route, but its exact purpose has vanished with the soil.
In ringfort (CO049-036001-). Hartnett (1939, 58) recorded a small opening to a Man-made underground passage 'immediately inside rampart at E'. This is now infilled. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 3: Mid Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1997). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
