Man-made underground passage — Report the wrong picture

No visible monument can hide the shape of the work: a narrow stone gallery, bent twice, cutting downhill through the fort's NE quadrant. The Z-shaped passage in County Galway is about 10.5m long, 2.1m wide, and drops 3.5m from its NW end to its SE end. It runs NE-SW, turns NW-SE, then E-W, with two lintels still visible at the east extremity. The slope, the bends and the surviving stones make the purpose easier to imagine: a way through, down and out of the fort when the land itself resisted a straight line.

Within NE quadrant of a ringfort (GA071-012----) which slopes steeply to SE. An exposed drystone-built Man-made underground passage, roughly Z-shaped in plan, which follows the lie of the land: the SE extremity is c. 3.5m below the level of NW end. The passage (L 10.5m, Wth 2.1m) runs NE-SW before turning, at NE end, on a NW-SE axis (L 7.4m) and then an E-W axis (L 6.5m) at SE end. It is unroofed apart from two lintels visible at E extremity.
