What is recorded here

On a slight rise on a gentle S-facing slope in relatively flat terrain, surrounded by pasture. Tillage in the field to the N. Most of the N wall (int. L 9.8m; int. H 2.7m; ext. H 3.2m; T 0.75m) and the N half of the E wall (int. L 2.7m; ext. H 3m; T 0.85m) survive. The lower courses of the N wall survive (H 0.45m) for a further 3.2m westward. There is no visible trace above ground of the S or W walls. According to O'Donovan (O'Flanagan 1930, vol. 1, 75 (197-8), though the upstanding remains in 1840 were similar to those that presently survive, the full length of the N wall could be traceable as he states that the 'building was seventy feet [21.3m] in length but the breadth cannot be ascertained'. The church is constructed of large blocks of limestone, roughly coursed. There are no features in the surviving lengths of wall. Internally the walls are heavily overgrown with ivy which has been trimmed back flush with the wall. The NW angle has been patched, possibly reconstructed, and has been crudely pointed with concrete, as has the external E face. There is a mound of rubble in the NE angle within the church, amongst which there is a dressed stone (L 0.64m; Wth 0.34m; T 0.27m) with a chamfered edge (Wth 0.09m). The church walls also form part of the enclosing wall of a small enclosed graveyard (TS062-030001-). Compiled by: Jean Farrelly Date of upload: 12 August 2013
