Máedóc of Ferns was born around 558 on Inisbrefny, an island in Templeport Lake within County Cavan, a watery cradle that later produced a bishop who founded thirty churches. Irish legend claims Saint Caillín gave the infant a bell at birth and that a stone slab carried him across the lake when no boat appeared, turning a simple baptism into a miraculous drift. That young hostage who freed other captives by refusing to leave them behind may have carried the lake’s patience into every church he later raised.
