St. Patricks Well

Situated on the W slope of a steep rocky hill a short distance N of the site of a possible graveyard (CV032-005001-). Well has been infilled and there are no remains visible at ground level. (Davies 1948, 81-2) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). Linked to St. Patrick, the well was traditionally associated with healing and pilgrimage, as was common with many early Christian holy wells in Ireland. Though now infilled, such sites often reflected pre-Christian sacred sites later Christianised in the early medieval period.
