Macroom Castle was built by the MacCarthy Reagh dynasty in the 15th century and later held by the Fitzgeralds, Earls of Desmond. It is important as a historic stronghold associated with key events in the Desmond Rebellions and as a symbol of Gaelic and Norman influence in Munster.
