Lurgabrack Nature Walk has an astonishing Donegal cast: woodland, dunes, Tramore Beach and distant mountains, all arranged around Horn Head as though the landscape wanted to show every trick at once. At present, though, the marked nature loop is closed for restoration work, so let the dunes recover and take the permitted beach approach from the car park instead. Sport Ireland's current notice says the wooded part of the trail is closed while a nature restoration project is under way, with local signs in place; it expressly says beach access from the car park remains open. Check that notice and the signs before travelling, because a closure described as lasting two months needs a confirmed reopening rather than a guessed date. Do not follow an old map through a closed gate. The route normally starts and finishes at Haggard car park near Horn Head and is listed as a moderate 4.7-kilometre loop taking about ninety minutes. Those route facts describe the walk when it is open. The trail's published guide traces a changing natural world: woodland and scrub, dune grassland and low wet dune hollows, then higher and lower dunes leading toward Tramore Beach. This is protected land within the Horn Head and Rinclevan conservation area. Sport Ireland says that on the full route, views can include Tory Island, the New Lake and the Muckish and Errigal mountains. That combination deserves patience, not a hurried dash through a sensitive patch of plants. I imagine the dunes telling visitors to wipe their feet before entering; for now, their actual message is the closure sign. Restoration is a real part of this place's story, not an interruption to be ignored. The LIFE INSULAR project reported in June 2026 that it was monitoring recovery at Lurgabrack after habitat work, using aerial photographs to see how the vegetation responded. Dune systems change and repair themselves only if given room. A walker's small choice to use the open route and leave the closed area alone helps protect the scene people hope to enjoy later. When the loop reopens, follow its dark-green-on-black waymarkers and keep to the established line. There is also a seasonal dog rule. Sport Ireland says dogs are not allowed on the trail from 1 September through 30 April; from 1 May through 31 August they may come only on strict leads. Since it is October and the loop is closed, do not bring a dog onto the trail now. Check the separate rules shown for the beach rather than assuming the trail rule covers every stretch of sand. Boggy ground, soft dunes and wind call for grippy footwear and weather layers whenever the full route is available again. Never cross electric fencing or leave a gate open. You can still admire this remarkable Donegal coast from the access that is actually open. Let the wooded loop wait for its restoration and come back when its managers say it is ready. Lurgabrack will have more stories to tell then, and a little restraint now gives them a better chance to flourish.
