What is recorded here
Long cairns were built during the Neolithic period when people first stayed in one place and buried their dead with ceremony. The Black Cairn in Ballyalbanagh belongs to that old time, before written history, when stone was arranged to mark the departed and keep memory alive. Its stones may have stood tall once, then fallen and been forgotten until mapped again. What is certain is that it is a long cairn, not a modern ornament, and it still points toward the people who first shaped that land.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as LONG CAIRN: THE BLACK CAIRN. Recorded period: NEOLITHIC; PREHISTORIC. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
Neolithic long cairn; dates to the Prehistoric period. It represents an early form of megalithic tomb construction, significant for understanding burial practices and social organisation in Neolithic Ireland.
The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
