Lisnaturnoga or Lisheennakilla (Site of)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Lisnaturnoga is a vanished fairy fort in Galway tillage, mapped once as a forty-five-metre circle around a limekiln but lost to the soil. The field may have swallowed human memory as readily as stone, leaving only a name to mark the absence. Forgetting is not emptiness; it is the landscape taking back what it borrowed.
In tillage, S of an earthwork (GA029-149----). Marked on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map as a circular enclosure (D c. 45m) within the centre of which a limekiln is shown. No visible surface trace survives. A CBG (GA029-150002-) is associated. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
