Lisheen (Childrens Burial Ground)

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Lisheen was a children's burial ground within a Galway enclosure, named on maps in 1899 before losing every visible trace. It is not easy to picture a place where the youngest departed were set aside, yet the name still points to that forgotten act of care.
Within an enclosure (GA091-005----). Named on 1st and 2nd (1899) eds of OS 6-inch maps as 'Lisheen'. No visible surface trace of it survives. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
