Lisheen; Childrens Burial Gd.

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Lisheen is a children's burial ground in County Mayo, Ireland, holding over 70 markers and a 1919 burial beside a holy well. The wet pasture and stone fences create a quiet boundary around small lives cut short, inviting wonder about the families who walked this path during fever or famine.
In wettish pasture, beside holy well (MA121-139002-). Rectangular area (23m N-S; 20m E-W), bounded S to E by stone field fences. Over 70 grave markers, a sandstone slab and a burial dating to 1919. The above description has been derived from D. Lavelle (compiler), An Archaeological Survey of Ballinrobe and District including Lough Mask and Lough Carra. Lough Mask and Lough Carra Tourist Development Association (1994), No. 674. Date of upload: 13 January 2015
