Lisheen Burying Ground

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Lisheen Burying Ground in County Galway holds small partially overgrown stones marking child graves oriented east to west within a twenty-three-metre irregular area. The quiet scale suggests a community set aside for its youngest members, while the surrounding enclosure implies the land remained protected long after the last burial.
Within an enclosure (GA042-137----). Unenclosed irregular area (N-S 23m) within which numerous small partially overgrown stones indicate graves oriented E-W. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 09 August 2010
