Lime Kiln Vault

Former lime kiln thought to have been used in the construction of Bedford Castle ca. 1100. Now covered by 1990s development of Castle Quay, it can be viewed through a window in the side of the building.

The Lime Kiln Vault is a medieval structure associated with the construction of Bedford Castle, dating to around 1100, and was used for burning limestone to produce lime for building purposes. It remains an important archaeological feature, now incorporated into the Castle Quay development, offering a rare glimpse into early medieval building techniques in Bedford.
