Overview
Amlwch's combined lighthouse and watch house was built in 1853, replacing an 1817 light beside the harbour of refuge. It served boatmen who rowed and towed ships through the port, and now forms a visitor centre explaining the harbour and Anglesey's rocks.
Why it was built
The small harbour of refuge opened in 1816 and received a fixed light the next year. Growing port work led to a larger three-storey lighthouse and watch house in 1853, placed where crews could watch the sea and harbour entrance.
People and work
Local boatmen known as hobblers waited at the watch house, then rowed out to tow vessels into or away from Amlwch. Their work depended on quick judgement, hard pulling and detailed knowledge of winds, water and the confined harbour.
How it changed
The 1853 building replaced the first harbour light, while the neighbouring harbourmaster's house was later lost after vandalism. GeoMôn acquired the watch house in 2010, repaired it as a visitor centre and restored the lighthouse signal in 2020.
What survives
The stout rubble-built tower survives with pale stone corners, a rendered upper floor, slate roof, small windows and its attached single-storey range. Its original harbour position remains clear, even though the vanished harbourmaster's house has left a gap beside it.
Why it mattered
This building preserves the people behind port movement: the crews who physically hauled ships when engines and harbour works could not do the whole job. Reuse as a visitor centre keeps Amlwch's maritime labour tied to the exact lookout from which it was organised.
