Lews Castle Hoard

Findspot (period Unassigned)

What is recorded here

No known castle stood at that point when a hand wrapped cut silver rings in cloth and pressed them into a drinking horn. The owner may have been a trader, a soldier or a fugitive, but the act was deliberately local: hide valuable things where roots and soil could keep them from ordinary sight. Lews Castle Hoard still belongs to that hidden moment, not to the building later raised above it.
Scotland's National Record of the Historic Environment records Lews Castle Hoard as Findspot (period Unassigned). The official map says its point is accurate as follows: NGR given to the nearest 1m. The record does not by itself mean that the public may enter the place.
Lews Castle Hoard is a significant archaeological find from the Iron Age, discovered in the Western Isles of Scotland, containing a large number of bronze objects, likely used for ritual or ceremonial purposes. It is important as it provides insight into prehistoric metalworking and social practices in early Scottish society.

The historic-place record does not grant public access. Check current conditions and ownership before entering land or a building.
