Lewes Castle, including its prominent Shell Keep, was built by William de Warenne, 1st Earl of Surrey, in the late 11th or early 12th century, following the Norman Conquest. It is important as a key historical and defensive structure in Sussex, and its keep is one of the best-preserved examples of a Norman shell keep in England.
