Leonard Ellis green plaque

This green commemorative plaque records: Leonard Ellis Leonard was the first civilian killed on British soil during WWI during the German bombardment of the town on 16th December 1914. Leonard worked as a porter here which was the Clare and Hunt Chemist shop. Leonard died at the corner of South Street outside the shop aged 47. Leonard Ellis, a civilian porter, became the first British civilian killed on home soil during World War I when he was struck by shrapnel during a German bombardment in December 1914. His death marked an early instance of the war's impact extending directly to civilians on British territory.
