This bronze commemorative plaque records: The Leighton Library. Erected 1687 with funds provided by a bequest from Robert Leighton, Bishop of Dunblane 1667-1671, Archbishop of Glasgow 1671-1674. Leighton Library, established in 1687 through a bequest by Robert Leighton, who served as Bishop of Dunblane and Archbishop of Glasgow, is one of Scotland's oldest public libraries, providing access to literature and learning for centuries.
