Leicester Castle Motte was built in the late 11th century following the Norman Conquest and formed part of the original Leicester Castle, which was established by William the Conqueror's half-brother, Bishop Odo of Bayeux. The motte remains an important archaeological site, reflecting early medieval military and administrative history in the region.
