Leagaun is a limestone pillar standing near Lough Gur in County Limerick, marked on maps since 1897 and described in 1944 as part of an ancient road. It rose through rocky pasture before woodland closed around it, joining Bronze Age burials, an Early Medieval settlement and another standing stone in a narrow band of land. People may have passed this stone for centuries, reading it as a boundary, a marker or a warning, while the lake watched from beyond the trees.

In former rocky pasture now surrounded by woodland, at the NE end of Lough Gur, which is located 415m to W. A standing stone also known as Leagaun (LI032-050----) stands 175m to NW; the Early Medieval settlement site known as the Spectacles (LI032-014012-) is located 550m to WNW; Bronze Age burials (LI032-055----) were excavated 75m to SW and Circle O (LI032-060----) is located 230m to SE. The standing stone (LI032-051----) is not depicted on the 1840 ed. OSi 6-inch map, but is depicted as an antiquity, annotated 'Leagaun' on the 1897 ed. OSi 25-inch map and Cassini ed. OSi 6-inch map. It is not visible on OSi orthoimage taken 2005-12 or on Digital Globe orthoimages taken 2011-2013 as the location of the monument is covered with woodland. The standing stone was listed by Windle (1912, 304, Plate XXIII) as Site Q. Described by O’Kelly (1944, 29) as following; ‘350’ [107m OD] a limestone pillar 4’ [1.22m] high and 1’ [0.3m] by 6” [0.15m] at the base. Part of ancient road.’ Grogan (1989, Vol. 2, 271) attached the site name ‘Lough Gur 3’ to the standing stone within his PhD thesis.
