Lawrence Oates blue plaque

This blue commemorative plaque records: "A very gallant gentleman". To commemorate Captain Lawrence E. G. Oates a member of Capt. Scott's expedition to the South Pole 1910-1912 a frequent visitor to Meanwoodside, the Oates family home. Died 17th March 1912

Lawrence Oates was a British Army officer and Antarctic explorer who died during Robert Falcon Scott's Terra Nova Expedition while attempting to reach the South Pole; he is remembered for his selfless act of walking out into a blizzard to save his fellow explorers.
