What is recorded here

Laphroaig Distillery was founded by the Johnston brothers in 1815 and preserves a rare working floor maltings beside the Islay shore.

Why it was built

Donald and Alexander Johnston established the distillery in 1815 beside a burn whose soft water and nearby peat suited whisky making. The sea allowed barley, coal and casks to move before good roads.

People and work

The Johnston family developed the business after Donald died in an accident at the works in 1847. Bessie Williamson later became manager and owner, an unusual female leader in twentieth-century Scotch whisky.

How it changed

The distillery survived United States prohibition partly through a medicinal reputation, then expanded under corporate ownership. It received a royal warrant from the Prince of Wales in 1994.

What survives

Whitewashed shore buildings, kilns, warehouses, still house, water source and floor maltings remain in use. Workers still turn a portion of the barley by hand and dry it over peat smoke.

Why it mattered

Laphroaig preserves labour-intensive parts of island whisky making that many larger works abandoned. Its family and Bessie Williamson stories give the famous flavour a human history.
