What is recorded here

Kylemore Fort is an overgrown hilltop enclosure at the W-end of a ridge in County Clare, Ireland. A dense SE sector contains a children’s burial ground, while a fallen wall and modern vehicle entrance mark the interior. The place stands where ancient defence, loss and ongoing use overlap.
At the W-end of a E-W ridge, overlooking Lough Atedaun c. 425m to the N. Hachured and named ‘Kylemore Fort’ on both the first (1842) and Cassini (1920) editions of the OS 6-inch map. Listed as ‘Enclosure’ in the RMP (1996). This mostly overgrown large irregularly subcircular hilltop enclosure (int. diam. 80m N-S; ext. diams. 92.5m N-S; c. 87m E-W) is defined by a scarp and bank, outside of which runs a fosse. The scarp (Wth 3.3m; H 1.3m) is traceable from SW-NW-NE, while the insubstantial earthen bank (max. Wth 4.8m; int. H 0.4-0.6m; ext. H 1.5m) can be traced along much of the rest of the perimeter, along with the remains of a drystone wall running along its top. Outside the scarp and bank is a generally flat-bottomed fosse (Wth of base 2-2.5m; Wth of top 6-6.5m; D below 1.5-1.8m; D below exterior 0.6-0.7m), and the remains of a modern drystone wall runs along the fosse’s outer lip. There is an old partly bush-covered entrance at NW, which has also been used in the modern era. There is a modern entrance (Wth c. 4m) used by vehicles at the S. Within the interior, just W of the S-entrance a band of collapse (20m N-S; Wth 2.5m) marks the line of a fallen wall running N to a slight briar-covered platform. A Children’s Burial Ground (CL017-012002-) is recorded in the densely overgrown SE sector of the interior.   Compiled by: Gearóid Conroy and Conn Herriott   Date of upload: 16-10-2025
