Knockin Castle rose from a small hillock in Shropshire after Hamon le Strange received the manor of Osbaston from Henry II in 1155. The Breton knight built a lowland stronghold under William FitzAlan, turning a scattered farming settlement into the caput of the le Strange barony. He died within four years, yet the castle endured as a guardian of the volatile Welsh border, shaping Marcher history through rebellion and war.
