Kilnacarriga Castle stands as a broken Z-shaped wall inside a living farmyard, perhaps marking a two-storey dwelling from the 17th century rather than a true fortress. O'Donovan measured its ghost in 1840, capturing a home now reduced to four metres of stubborn stone on a steep slope. The missing rooms do not disappear; they reappear whenever someone imagines the heat, noise and breath of the people who first shaped that space.
Situated in a farmyard at the W side of a N-S stream on a severe S-facing slope. It ws described by O'Donovan c. 1840 (O'Flanagan 1929, 70) as a 'dwelling house (int. dims. c. 12m N-S; c. 5.5m E-W) of two storeys'. There are no historical references to a castle here, but it may have been a 17th-century house. A Z-shaped wall consisting of two walls (ext. dims. 4.55m N-S; 4.14m E-W; max. H 4m) and a fragment of a third with no distinguishing features survives.

The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.

Built by an unknown local family, likely in the 17th or 18th century, Kilnacarriga Castle is remembered as a rare example of a domestic stone building in a region where such structures are uncommon, reflecting early settlement patterns and construction techniques in the area.
