Kiln in Coolamurry

Kiln

What is recorded here

Situated on the N-facing slope of a low rise on a gentle S-facing slope. Archaeological excavation (04E0325) in advance of the N30 re-alignment as site 5a uncovered a complex kiln. A number of flues at the N end led into the kiln (dims. 3.1m NW-SE; 1.5m E-W; D 0.4m) cut into deeply oxidized clay. There was a hearth nearby and the S bulbous end was sheltered by a slot trench c. 1.3m distant NE-S. A small cobbled area just to the W is also probably associated with it. The troughs of fulacht fia (WX025-054001-) are c. 12m to the E. (Fegan 2004, 2007) Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 3 July, 2012
