Kiln

On a low hill in undulating pasture. A medieval corn-drying kiln, excavated in 2009, was at the W extent of the site that also included a burial ground (LF013-146----) and a possible medieval field system (LF013-147----) (Stephens 2009b). The excavation revealed that the kiln had been constructed within an earlier fosse. The structure was dumb-bell-shaped and comprised a subcircular bowl (diam. 1.6m; D 0.5m) and a long narrow curving flue (L 4.2m; Wth 0.8m; D 0.5m) aligned NE-SW, defined by a series of upright slabs. Stephens (ibid.) believed that this led to the drying area which lay outside the excavated area but also noted that the charcoal-rich fill in the flue petered out in the bowl and that the bowl could conceivably have been the drying area.
