Kiln

This possible corn-drying kiln was excavated in 2003 in advance of the construction of the N8 Rathcormac-Fermoy Bypass. A figure-of-eight-shaped pit, which was filled with loose stones and soil, was situated c. 1.5m to the SE of a Bronze Age house (CO044-073002-). Two sherds of cord-impressed Middle Bronze Age pottery were recovered from the fill of this pit. The basal fill of the pit comprised a grey/brown silty clay while another fill comprised a large number of flat stones. According to the excavator (Cotter 2006a, 34), the function of the feature is unclear, but its morphology is similar to that of some corn-drying kilns, though there is no evidence to suggest it was ever used.
