Explorer Tom Woodend in Dumfries and Galloway is a natural feature that started because two lads made a bet in the pub about who could find it first. They probably lost their glasses doing it, but hey, the hill is still there looking unimpressed by your modern excuses for being late. It’s got no specific history, just a name and a lot of potential to trip you up. If anyone asks, Tom sent you.
Explorer Tom Blackloch is a military road from the 18th century that looks like two lads in a pub bet on who could build the straightest line through mud. They probably lost their shirts and their dignity doing it, but hey, history was made with a shovelful of dirt. It’s still there, judging your driving skills from the side. Dare you to say hello to it out loud.
Explorer Tom Anwoth Old Kirk has a superstition that if you touch the cross slab, your bad luck evaporates like morning dew. Locals swear by it, so I’m not touching anything unless absolutely necessary, just in case. Best seen with a hangover and a sausage roll.
Explorer Tom Anwoth House is a manse with an outbuilding that probably hides a tunnel straight to the pub, if you believe the local legends. It’s got that secretive vibe, like it’s keeping its cards close to the chest and judging your outfit as you walk past. I’d bet my left shoe there’s a hidden door behind the garden wall that leads to pure magic. Take a breath of that air, it's older
Explorer Tom Cardoness Castle witnessed a love story that went so badly wrong someone probably threw a very expensive goblet at the wall. The stone still looks bruised and slightly offended about the whole situation, honestly. Pretend it's yours and plan the housewarming.
Explorer Tom Cally Castle is a messy mix of earthworks and towers, like a medieval designer who couldn't decide on a theme. There was definitely a dance party there that went too far, ending with someone falling into a furrow. Great spot to propose. Or at least to propose lunch.
